Sarongs From the Island of Bali

Many of the sarongs we sell are manufactured in Bali, Indonesia (See photo below). The have many different styles and color being made there as Bali is a hub for sarong manufacturing, as well as western tourism, worldwide. While the material most likely comes from the neighboring island of Java (Jawa), the processing and styles of a Bali sarong can still be very much so unique. They may blend and match more with the Western world expectations as the traditional styles have been influenced by tourism from Western part of the world.




Many Balinese still wear a traditional style sarong - often without bright colors or flashy sequins, and you'll note that it is often required for you to wear one in Bali when visiting a temple, should you be wear a par of shorts instead of full length pants. Pants are probably not a common thing to wear in Indonesia during the day for tourist as the heat would make them rather uncomfortable. You will see children, boys and girls both, wearing a Bali sarong to school or while at play after school. Often they are worn to religious ceremonies as a formal attire. There are may many uses in the Bali culture for a Bali sarong.

Sarongs made in Bali, Indonesia with focus on being sold to Westerners have a much different appearance to them. They may be more beach-like, thinner, brighter colors etc. You find that both the traditional sarongs and the other beach style sarongs can have fringe on two ends. It is a typical and widely accepted practice in the creation of the sarong. The traditional prints or stamps are more of a geometrical design, like shapes, plaid or strips, where the beach style sarongs are made with stamps or screen prints of sea life or flowers.

While the islands them selves may be different the sarong is the same. The reason people differentiate the Bali sarong from other sarongs around the world is most likely due to its popularity. You can compare it to sarongs (or similar wraps) in India, Thailand, China and other areas of Asia. The Bali sarong is really the type of sarong that comes from Indonesia. Considering most of the Indonesian tourism is in Bali, that is the name that stuck when referring to the sarong.
